ABOUT

Overview

Realizing the uniqueness of this new delivery of education, Poway USD focused on creating a “Design-Thinking Environment” that will “Change the way we do school”.  The Educational Specifications for Design39Campus focused on three primary academic concepts: PODS/ non-traditional grade spans, Makery Spaces, and Imagination Studios/ Collaboration Spaces.

The school was designed around a “Design Thinking” learning model. The campus is designed to provide for and enrollment of 1,500 K-8 students in a highly integrated learning environment.

Through inquiry-based design, learners have the full freedom to progress at their own pace, move between learning spaces and discover how they learn best.  This personalized approach inspires kids to see learning as a journey rather than a destination.  The design supports this by providing a variety of learning spaces that put the learner at the center.

INSTRUCTION AND COLLABORATION PLANNING

The floor plan is laid out to accommodate multiple scales of instruction, from small groups up to groups of more than 60 children. Each scale of instruction can be hosted in different flexible spaces that are connected to others. Specific pairs of classrooms can be opened to one another with operable walls. And Corridors are widened and open onto collaborations spaces.  The plan exemplifies the project goal of hosting learning in every space.
