Like we normally do, we celebrated the conclusion of another year with one another in a festive fashion. This year we enjoyed dinner and the view with our team from Peohe’s in Coronado. In valuing culture, we have fostered a community of professionals that can both depend on one another and enjoy one another.

Go Bison!

Liberty High School construction is well underway, and not just in the physical buildings. The district is busy preparing the campus’ new curriculum under the leadership of Principal Erika Tejeda. Click on the video above to get a tour of what’s in store for the campus.

It’s an exciting time seeing the original vision of the District’s educational specifications continue its formation from the built environment now into an educational reality. We are excited to partner with such visionary thinkers at this district, and to walk alongside them as they translate their aspirations for what learning could be into a world class comprehensive high school campus.

Be sure to follow the District on Facebook to catch future updates on the project’s progress. #WeAreLibertyHigh

Monthly Lunch!

At BakerNowicki, we love sharing a good meal with one another. Once each month, our Partnership tries to celebrate our team’s hard work with Lunch. Kelley and our administrative team frequently “outdo” themselves each time and find the office a wide ranger of often culturally excellent culinary experiences. This week’s experience was a taste from the Dominican Republic, with food from the Tropical Savor Bar and Grill. Elinson, the owner, even came to share the background of the numerous dishes and helped us pick some music for the meal. Together, we ignored the uncharacteristically drab San Diego weather  and found our island of sunshine through food, music and community.

If you’d like to give the food a try yourself, they are located downtown in the Gaslamp at 729 Fourth Ave:

We highly recommend it!

DSA Specialists

As you read this, BakerNowicki has more than 115 million dollars’ worth of construction projects processing through DSA. We are likely to be one of the most experienced teams in the region in processing projects through DSA. As specialists in designing education facilities in the State of California, the Baker Nowicki Design Studio deals daily with the Division of State Architect (DSA), the Chancellor’s Office, and the State Allocation Board (SAB). One of our Partners is the current president of the California Architects Board. We are connected. And because of these connections and experiences, we know what it takes to design school facilities and obtain necessary approvals from all pertinent State Agencies for school projects.

Our team works extensively with the Division of the State Architect and has processed hundreds of projects through DSA. We maintain positive working relationships with the management and staff in the San Diego offices of DSA and can effectively address issues that can affect project approvals and timing. Our in-depth understanding of the California Building Code and the CALGreen Code requirements allows us to effectively negotiate code issues with DSA to our clients’ best advantage. In addition to our working closely with DSA we also have a great deal of experience in coordinating and working with local Building, Engineering, Planning and Fire Departments. Prior to DSA sign off we work closely with our Civil Engineer to coordinate with local fire and planning departments to ensure that the project meets all local jurisdiction standards and requirements. That includes but is not limited to traffic engineering, water/sewer, irrigation standards, fire department access, and hydrant adequacy.

We also cultivate professional relationships with staff at the Division of the State Architect that promote mutual efficiency and the betterment of school design. We have been providing counsel on the integration of technology into DSA’s plan review process, including spearheading a local Bluebeam User Group in San Diego. The first session (picture above) shows a joint presentation by Paul Rooney of DSA, Mark Manstoff of Newport Mesa Unified, and Brian Leonard from BakerNowicki on digital file continuity for school design and construction. We also work with the Division of the State Architect on code related issues, including a proposed code change to improved educational environments in schools.

REGULATORY AGENCY EXPERIENCE

As specialists in designing education facilities in the State of California, the Baker Nowicki Design Studio deals daily with the regulatory authorities that oversee the design and construction of educational facilities in California. These include the Division of State Architect (DSA), California Department of Education (CDE), the Office of Public School Construction (OPSC), and the Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC). Additionally, our work throughout Southern California brings us into regular contact with most local agencies such as Departments of Public Health, City and County Planning, Engineering, and Traffic Departments, Local Fire Marshals, Public Utility providers and Water Districts. We understand the regulatory authority as well as the expectations of these governing authorities and can efficiently obtain necessary approvals.

Julie Zimmerman, leads our Education Funding Services Department and has secured over $1.7 billion from the State for New Construction, Joint Use and Modernization projects.  She works closely with our client districts and OPSC to ensure that our districts receive the maximum funding allowed under School Facility Program (SFP) regulations.  Since OPSC regulations and policies change frequently, she continually monitors new policies and how those changes affect school projects.

Julie Zimmerman

Principal, Educational Funding Services

Our team has excellent relationships with staff at CDE School Facilities Planning Division. We know Title 5 criteria and the policies that require the safe and adequate design of school projects.  We fully understand the process that needs to be followed to allow for the timely approval of plans by CDE.

Our team works extensively with the Division of the State Architect, and has processed hundreds of projects through DSA. We maintain positive working relationships with DSA management and staff and can effectively address issues that can affect project approvals and timing. Our in-depth understanding of the CEQA process, California Building Code and the CAL Green Code requirements allows us to effectively negotiate code issues with DSA to achieve an optimum and code-compliant outcome for each project.

“Julie has been invaluable to the District. Her working knowledge, communication, organizational skills and uncompromising work ethics enable maximum funding for our projects.”

EDUCATIONAL PLANNING

We find that designing schools is very rewarding, both professionally and personally. Many of us have children or are married to educators. Education is something that is very important to our staff, and we are all very committed to doing our part in helping students flourish in the spaces we design. Here are a few ways that we help in the planning and design of educational environments.

PROGRAMMING & SCHEMATIC DESIGN

We utilize a tried and true methodology of collaborative design strategies to move from Vision to Solution. Our collaborative design process seeks full involvement and interaction of key project stakeholders. The direct involvement of our clients in the design process provides essential insights and contributes to the development of a shared solution that responds to the vision of our clients and their stakeholders.

VISIONING

We facilitate stakeholder visioning sessions at which we meet with District departments and consultants including M&O, Construction Services, Planning, Food Service, IT, Ed Services, school site staff and end-users to review program needs and facility needs. We will translate our clients’ visions to paper.

ASSESSMENT

Concurrent with the visioning process, we review each district’s site Master Plans and Educational Specifications. We also begin collecting the site data including site history, climate data, traffic patterns in around the school and assess if facilities meet academic and technology needs. Lastly, we review roofs, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling systems. We schedule interviews with the principals, custodial staff, administrative staff to further any on site issues.

Our on-going involvement in educational planning & research, allows us to interpret your long terms needs into innovative solutions that recognize and implement the newest concepts in learning and teaching strategies.

Richard Nowicki, AIAPartner

COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION

We believe our highest value is to help our clients make good decisions. Therefore it is our mission to bring ideas and alternatives that are appropriate and relevant to your operational and educational needs. Through our commitment to collaborative planning, the facility solutions we develop will be formed with your direct involvement.

The best examples we can give of our on-going commitment to advancing the state of educational planning is in our work. Whether it be the paradigm shifts in the pedagogy of the Design 39 Campus, or the Career and Technical focus of the Del Lago Academy, or the most recent blending of these concepts envisioned in the New High School #4 for the Perris Union HSD, we believe that the entire campus is a learning space. The configuration, layout and Architecture must all work together to foster student engagements that allow for critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

Our firm is dedicated to innovative designs for educational facilities based on conceptual approaches that integrate context, form and experience. We see each project as a synergy of the ideal and the circumstantial. A proper design solution must always respond to the special needs of each individual client and circumstance. Our ability to identify unique solutions to complex project challenges has led to many innovative concepts to address programmatic needs, solve challenging project delivery issues, and to meet tough budget limitations.

Although, campus specific program and planning strategies can vary in response to the individual needs, Program-Driven Planning include some fundamental design strategies that are ever present:

  • Student-Centered Planning
  • Collaboration and Transparency
  • Flexibility and Adaptability
  • Academic Program Integration
  • Career Technology Pathways
  • STEM & STEAM Integration
  • Project-Based Inquiry & Application
  • Student Safety & Campus Security
