DSA Specialists

As you read this, BakerNowicki has more than 115 million dollars’ worth of construction projects processing through DSA. We are likely to be one of the most experienced teams in the region in processing projects through DSA. As specialists in designing education facilities in the State of California, the Baker Nowicki Design Studio deals daily with the Division of State Architect (DSA), the Chancellor’s Office, and the State Allocation Board (SAB). One of our Partners is the current president of the California Architects Board. We are connected. And because of these connections and experiences, we know what it takes to design school facilities and obtain necessary approvals from all pertinent State Agencies for school projects.

Our team works extensively with the Division of the State Architect and has processed hundreds of projects through DSA. We maintain positive working relationships with the management and staff in the San Diego offices of DSA and can effectively address issues that can affect project approvals and timing. Our in-depth understanding of the California Building Code and the CALGreen Code requirements allows us to effectively negotiate code issues with DSA to our clients’ best advantage. In addition to our working closely with DSA we also have a great deal of experience in coordinating and working with local Building, Engineering, Planning and Fire Departments. Prior to DSA sign off we work closely with our Civil Engineer to coordinate with local fire and planning departments to ensure that the project meets all local jurisdiction standards and requirements. That includes but is not limited to traffic engineering, water/sewer, irrigation standards, fire department access, and hydrant adequacy.

We also cultivate professional relationships with staff at the Division of the State Architect that promote mutual efficiency and the betterment of school design. We have been providing counsel on the integration of technology into DSA’s plan review process, including spearheading a local Bluebeam User Group in San Diego. The first session (picture above) shows a joint presentation by Paul Rooney of DSA, Mark Manstoff of Newport Mesa Unified, and Brian Leonard from BakerNowicki on digital file continuity for school design and construction. We also work with the Division of the State Architect on code related issues, including a proposed code change to improved educational environments in schools.
